Human Rights: Case Study
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. Billy, a former Golf Masters Champion and celebrity interviewer for Channel 9, discovered that the Daily Gossip is planning to publish an article in its Sunday edition that claims he enjoyed "sexual pleasures" with two lap dancers at a London club in January 2002. Concerned the story will upset his six-year-old son from his former marriage to Linda, he claims that since he is single and a minor celebrity there is no public interest in the claims of the Daily Gossip. However, Alf, Billy's public relation manager and agent, just informed him that the Daily Gossip paid £50.00 to Janie, Billy's ex-lover, for her exclusive interview where she will allege that Billy drinks excessively. This news distresses Billy a great deal and has him concerned about his reputation, inasmuch as he just appeared in a government-sponsored advertisement advising young people of the dangers of alcohol. Billy's reputation is on the line; along with feeling betrayed by those closest to him, he also must consider the validity of such claims and what they will most likely do to both his personal and professional life. Images of Deviance in the Media: A Comparison of Low and High Consensus Deviance Newspaper Articles
[ send me this paper ]
This is a 10 page paper comparing two newspaper articles: one which reported low consensus deviance (smoking); and one which reported high consensus deviance (murder). Two articles were found published within the last two weeks in the Toronto Star which provided a good contrast in reporting styles, intended audience, and low and high consensus deviance. One article, the low consensus deviance article on Canadian youth smoking was written by a Toronto Star reporter and provided a fairly distant, highly statistical account of a recent survey taken. The second article, the high consensus deviance article reporting a murder in California by two brothers is considered more sensational in content and was mass distributed by the Associated Press. The reason why it would be of interest in Toronto may be because of the inclusion of the television show The Sopranos as an influence on the boys’ crime.
