Ishmael Beah/A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Boy Soldier
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page book review that examines this autobiography. There are places throughout the world where war has become a way of life and human rights violations are the norm. The large-print, hardcover edition of Ishmael Beah's autobiography A Long Way Gone, Memoirs of a Boy Soldier explains on its back cover that it has been estimated that are roughly 300,000 children worldwide who have been commandeered into military services, fed drugs and issued AK47s. Traumatized and denied a childhood, these children are forced to commit horrendous acts. This is a global tragedy and Ishmael Beah was one of these children. His story is profound. Islam and the sub-Saharan Gold Trade
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page analysis of the spread of Islam in Africa. This paper connects that spread to the Islamic quest for gold and the sub-Saharan gold trade which resulted. Observations are made to support the contention that that cross cultural contact greatly increased as a result of the Islamic and African participation in the trans-Saharan gold trade and that this increased contact led not only to the spread of Islam among the indigenous peoples of Africa but also a diversity of positive and negative impacts to those peoples. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

Ivory Coast: Overcoming Conflict
[ send me this paper ]
4 pages in length. Since September 19, 2002, the Ivory Coast has experienced a major conflict due to myriad causes: ethnicity (tribalism) and ethnic rivalries, bad governance, lack of transparency, lack of respect for human right, corruption and nepotism, and unequal sharing or power. As such, one might readily argue how the economic climate of the Ivory Coast is inextricably associated with its ongoing conflict; to relief such pressure and begin to work toward peace, its economic infrastructure must experience an infusion of external support in such a way that sustains rather than detracts, such as tourism. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Journey of a Black Man from Liberia to the U.S.
[ send me this paper ]
6 pages in length. An excellent report for those studying cultural anthropology. Based largely on an interview with a 53 year-old man who came to the U.S. from Liberia, the writer discusses language, culture, social structure, and political problems in Liberia and contains the interviewee's comments on the "absurd" racial tensions that exist in the U.S. between Whites and Blacks. No Bibliography.

Kenya's Constitutional Angst
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page paper discussing the 2005 failure of a draft constitution to pass in a national referendum. The draft constitution addressed several issues including women's roles in the government and economy, but many activists for women's rights claimed that the draft was not specific enough and contained the potential for extensive abuse. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

Kenya's Kikuyu
[ send me this paper ]
An 8 page paper discussing Kenya's largest indigenous tribal group. The Kikuyu are not particularly well educated, but their lack of education must not be confused with lack of ability. These people are warm and generous, and they expect others to be in return. As the operators and students of the US school have learned, the Kikuyu will make some allowances for visitors' ignorance of their ways, but they expect respect for their society. Includes an outline, bibliography lists 15 sources.
